A 30-year-old Moses Lake man was arrested early Friday after he tried to kidnap his roommate's two young sons, authorities said.
The boys, ages 3 and 4, were quickly found by Grant County sheriff's deputies and returned to their mother unharmed, said Undersheriff Dave Ponozzo.
Shane J. Soares is accused of taking the boys from their bedroom at 12:15 a.m., scooping one child under each arm and running out of the home on the 900 block of Lowry Street.
The boys' mother, Celena Robinson, called 911 and said Soares accused her of poisoning the boys, Ponozzo said.
She said Soares was her roommate and had no legal rights to the boys.
Deputies found Soares near Arlington Drive and Patton Boulevard, and when he saw deputies he picked up the boys and ran, Ponozzo said.
Soares was caught after a short chase.
Deputies had contact with Soares about an hour earlier when they got a call about a man screaming and causing a disturbance at Arlington Drive and Lowry Street.
They found Soares yelling and acting out because "the Lord told him to," Ponozzo said.
He also reportedly said his home was "infested with demons." but they had no cause to arrest him for a crime or enough cause to detain him for a mental health evaluation, Ponozzo said.
After being caught with the young boys, Soares was arrested and booked into the Grant County jail on suspicion of two counts of second-degree kidnapping.
