PASCO -- Terro Bell isn't likely to be mistaken for Jordan Downing off the football field.
At 5-feet-7, 140 pounds, Bell is a mere shadow of the power-packed all-state running back, who was lost for the season with a broken fibula last week.
But at the end of Chiawana's 28-0 win over Davis on Friday at Edgar Brown Stadium, Bell's numbers looked eerily similar to the ones routinely posted by the Riverhawks' fallen star.
On 30 carries, Bell racked up 176 yards and two touchdowns as Chiawana clinched its second consecutive CBBN 4A title.
"Tonight meant a lot to me. I was doing it for Jordan," said Bell, who transferred from Pasco over the summer. "(Downing) just told me it was my time. I wasn't too nervous. I know my abilities and what I can do."
He also remembered to thank his starting offensive line -- Kayden Maughan, Alejandro Chavez, Chandler Newell, Ryan Garcia and Gates Michel -- for providing ample running room against the CBBN's worst run defense.
"Bell and Absalon Hernandez did a nice job. The line gave them a lot of room to run. We wanted to keep the ball away from them," said Riverhawks coach Steve Graff, who added his eighth league title to an already impressive stack of accomplishments.
But this victory held added meaning, considering the loss of Downing, widely considered the heart of the team.
Graff pointed to the team's other seniors -- especially Miquiyah Zamora, C.J. Edrington and Michel -- who stepped up when the team needed them most.
"They might have gassed us with their running game a little, but we didn't give up a big play on defense," Graff said after Chiawana held Davis quarterback Deion Wright -- the league's top passer -- to just 5-of-11 for 48 yards and three interceptions.
But from their opening drive on offense, the Riverhawks didn't have to do much else than just run the ball.
Quarterback Joey Zamora handed the ball off to Bell seven straight times on Chiawana's first drive, which was capped by Bell's 15-yard run between Garcia and Michel.
"The biggest thing was we just couldn't stop them. They did a nice job blocking us, and we couldn't tackle," said Pirates coach Rick Clark. "But they're as good a defensive team as I've seen in my six years in the league."
Bell got the first six handoffs on the next drive, too, before Hernandez carried the ball on the next five plays.
By the time the Riverhawks got around to their first passing play, Davis was ready to bite on the play action pass.
Joey Zamora worked it to perfection, hitting Edrington on a comeback route on the right sideline before the 5-11 senior broke a tackle and scampered in for a 33-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.
Edrington also had one of Chiawana's three interceptions of Wright, who came in averaging 343 passing yards a game.
"Our secondary stepped up really well tonight. We knew coming in they had some really good wide receivers," Edrington said. "Miquiyah had a huge game."
Miquiyah, a returning all-CBBN selection at receiver and cornerback, answered the call in a big way, catching six passes for 133 yards and scoring a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown on his only carry of the night. He also added an interception of his own in the second quarter to end a potential scoring drive by Davis at the Riverhawks' 11 yard line.
"Last week we lost our captain and my best friend. He always tried to push me to be the best. As a team, we had something to play for," Zamora said.
Bell put Chiawana up 21-0 with a minute left in the first half, showing some elusiveness on a run up the gut from four yards out. The play got stopped at the line of scrimmage, but Bell spun away from Davis lineman Calvin Hernandez inside the tackle. Then bounced outside and juked linebacker Austin Wagner in the backfield and took off for the corner of the end zone.
A short burst of speed later, he was in.
"This was a big win," Bell said. "We're the CBBN leaders, and we don't want to share (the title) with anybody."
