A motorcyclist from Vancouver, Wash., was killed in a high-speed crash that caused the pickup he slammed into to roll over, authorities said.

John Robert Loewen, 39, was speeding on his 2002 Kawasaki motorcycle in the northbound lane of Hinzerling Road near Prosser about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Benton County sheriff's officials said.

Loewen apparently tried to stop at the stop sign, but was not able to and ended up going into the intersection and then colliding with a 1990 Dodge truck that headed west on Evans Road.

Loewen hit the driver's side of the truck and the impact caused the truck to flip and roll down a steep embankment, officials said.

The driver, Dennis Ellinghousen, 41, of Sunnyside, was thrown out the rear window as it rolled.

Loewen died at the scene.

Ellinghousen suffered cuts to his face and head. He was taken to Prosser Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.

He was in satisfactory condition Thursday afternoon, a hospital spokesman said.

Sheriff's investigators are continuing to try to determine how fast Loewen was driving. There are no indications of alcohol or drugs being a factor, officials said.
