A Kiona-Benton City High School student was arrested after taking the remnants of a pipe bomb to school Monday.

Zachary Zane Yates, 18, of Benton City, was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of possessing an explosive device, said Deputy Joe Lusignan.

Yates apparently had blown up a pipe bomb he made with a firework at home, then took part of the pipe to school, officials said.

A teacher reported the incident to Benton County sheriff's deputies, who called out the Richland Police Bomb Squad.

No danger was found to the school and students were not evacuated, school officials said Monday.

After searching Yates' backpack at school, deputies and bomb squad technicians searched Yates' home, Lusignan said.

No completed bombs were found, but investigators did find other items at the home that provided cause for deputies to arrest Yates for possessing an explosive device, Lusignan said.
