PROSSER -- Officials from Washington State University and the state Tree Fruit Research Commission plan to announce today a new multimillion dollar research program in Prosser.
Jim Doornink, chairman of the state commission, and Washington State University President Elson Floyd, plan a joint announcement about the program at the WSU Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Prosser.
The program, which is estimated to be about $25 million, will be paid for through assessments on tree fruit growers.
"We can't rely on government, so we will be assessing ourselves to make sure WSU has the capacity to take care of our research needs," said Denny Hayden, who grows cherries on Hayden Farms north of Pasco in Franklin County.
