Pasco vs Kamiakin

PASCO -- Kamiakin's opening kickoff return -- a perfectly blocked 94-yard touchdown gallup by Jesse Houser -- was big.

Jason Hutchison's three touchdown passes of 48 yards or more was impressive.

Six touchdowns by six different players was a testament to the Braves' balanced offense.

But perhaps the most important aspect of Kamiakin's 42-14 CBBN 3A win over Pasco on Friday at Edgar Brown Stadium was this:

Drew Oord was back.

After serving a two-game suspension -- retroactive to last year's spring season -- for a violation of the student code, the Braves linebacker and fullback was in full seek-and-destroy mode against the Bulldogs.

When he wasn't making tackles (he led the team with eight), he was dishing out punishment on the kick return teams. When he wasn't firing out as a lead blocker for Zach Umemoto, he was carrying the ball himself.

And to add the finishing touches, he even scored Kamiakin's final touchdown on a 1-yard, third-quarter plunge.

"I was so excited to play. The whole day I couldn't really focus," said Oord, a two-way starter on the Braves' team that reached the 3A championship in 2010. "Sitting out was real tough. I felt more like I was letting the team down."

But he didn't let anybody down Friday.

"I love that kid. He's something special," said Hutchison, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns. "I'll watch him make about 10 great hits every game. He makes everybody around him better."

Houser's kickoff return to the house to open the game was a bad omen for Pasco, which had slow starts in its first two losses to Richland and Chiawana.

Down 7-0, the Bulldogs went three-and-out on their opening drive. They knew they had to settle down. What they didn't know was they were missing cornerback Ethan Cantu, who was getting taped up on the sideline when Pasco's defense lined up for their first play.

Hutchison saw wide receiver Brandon Larson all by himself down the right sideline, fired him a pass and watched him stroll 55 yards for a score.

After 1:22, it was 14-0 Kamiakin.

"We're playing like a team that's learning. We don't have 35 seniors, but we should know better," said Bulldogs coach Dustin Lamb. "Right after we spotted them 21 points, we started to put together some drives."

The Braves rolled up 309 yards of offense, most from the passing game. But when Hutchison had Pasco's defenders on their heels, he handed the ball off to Umemoto or Oord, who ran for a TD each.

"I felt offensively we did what we wanted. We had a game plan and we followed it," said Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin. "We had a nice halftime lead (35-7). I'm very proud of how the JV kids did when they got in there."

T.J. Avery hit Luis Murillo on an 8-yard score for Pasco's first TD late in the first quarter, and Lonnie Hurley added a second-half touchdown run.

"We just need to start off a little better motivated," said Hurley, who led the team with 30 rushing yards and added 47 yards on six receptions.
