A 19-year-old man shot at a Pasco police officer before the cop returned fire and shot him Wednesday afternoon, investigators said Thursday.
Officer Chad Pettijohn chased Ezequiel Chavez into the 900 block of North 15th Avenue after Chavez ran from him, said Pasco police Capt. Jim Raymond.
Investigators said independent statements and evidence at the scene show Chavez shot a handgun at Pettijohn, who then returned fire, Raymond said.
The number of shots fired by Chavez and Pettijohn still is under investigation. Pettijohn was not hurt.
Chavez, who pleaded guilty to drug possession less than two months ago, was in stable condition Thursday. Officials said Wednesday that he was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland. No information about where he was wounded has been released.
The shooting is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit. The independent unit of officers from multiple agencies was created in January to investigate officer-involved shootings.
Pettijohn was responding to the 1100 block of Park Street at 12:17 p.m. Wednesday after someone reported several individuals were acting suspicious and possibly burglarizing a home, Raymond said.
When Pettijohn got to the area, he saw two people who matched the description provided by the 911 caller walking away. As Pettijohn tried to stop them, Chavez took off running and Pettijohn chased him into a yard on North 15th Avenue, Raymond said.
Pettijohn, a six-year veteran of the Pasco Police Department, is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
Chavez had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the shooting. He is wanted for escape from community custody on a drug-related conviction, Raymond said.
Chavez, who had four convictions as a juvenile, picked up his first adult felony conviction earlier this year in Franklin County Superior Court. He was charged in June with possessing methamphetamine and pleaded guilty July 19, according to online court records.
He was sentenced the following week to 30 days in jail and had 11 days left to serve. Chavez also was ordered to complete one year of probation, known as community custody.
Raymond, who is serving as acting police chief, also said a woman was arrested following an investigation into the original 911 call to the 1100 block of West Park Street.
The woman's name was not released, but Raymond said she had outstanding warrants.
The Franklin County jail log shows Nicole Amber Hornbuckle, 29, who lives on West Park Street, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant by Pasco police.
No other arrests were made.
