What started as a burglary call ended with two men in custody for questioning -- and a third in serious condition at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland after being shot by a Pasco police officer.

The officer, whose name was not released, was called at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to a suspected burglary at a home on 14th Avenue near Sylvester Street, said Pasco police Capt. Ken Roske.

When the officer arrived, he saw three males who matched the descriptions he was given for the burglary suspects. They were walking away from the home.

The suspects ran and he ran after them between some houses on 15th Avenue. One of the suspects reportedly pulled out a gun and waved it at the officer, Roske said.

Then the officer shot, he said.

Roske said he didn't know how many shots were fired or whether the suspect fired his weapon. Information on the suspect's injuries also wasn't released.

Roske said a gun believed to be the one brandished by the burglary suspect was found at the scene.

Police cordoned off Sylvester Street between 14th and 15th avenues while they searched for the other two suspects.

Clusters of people baked in the late summer sun as they watched police officers from several agencies swarm the neighborhood.

Some onlookers commented on the heat as they fanned themselves or huddled in the shade. Several were shocked to hear that someone had been shot in the residential neighborhood just a block from Pasco High School's football stadium.

Four area schools -- Pasco High, Emerson and Longfellow elementary schools, and Captain Gray Early Learning Center -- were locked down for about 45 minutes while police searched the area.

In less than 30 minutes, officers had taken two suspects into custody for questioning.

Their names also were not released and they had not been arrested by late Wednesday.

Neither the officer nor the other two suspects were hurt, Roske said.

He said the Special Investigations Unit, an independent unit of officers from various agencies, was called in to conduct the investigation because a police officer was involved.

This is the second time the unit has been used. It was formed in January and called on earlier this year when Richland officers shot and killed a car theft suspect.
