UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Tina Charles scored 18 points and added
17 rebounds for her WNBA-record 23rd double-double of the season to lead Connecticut past visiting New York 69-63.
Kennewick's Leilani Mitchell started for the Liberty (19-15) and had eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
New York used a 6-0 run midway through the fourth period to take a 59-54 lead with 3:32 left. Mitchell's off balance 3-pointer as time expired in the first half capped a 21-6 run and gave New York a 33-26 halftime lead over Connecticut (21-13).
Mitchell, 26, finished the regular season averaging 5.6 points, 2.9 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game. She started 30 of 34 games, average 25.4 minutes per game, and shot 80 percent from the free-throw line.
The Liberty, the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, will play a best-of-3 series vs. the top-seeded Indiana Fever.
Game 1 is 5 p.m. PDT Thursday and scheduled for a live broadcast on ESPN2. The teams split their four-game regular-season series, each winning one game on the road.
