A Pasco man's blood-alcohol level was allegedly more than three times the legal limit Sunday evening when he crashed into another car on Highway 12.
Gonzalo Olivera-Ramirez, 25, appeared Monday in Franklin County Superior Court on an investigative hold for possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and driving under the influence, a gross misdemeanor.
His bail is set at $5,000, but he also has a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
Prosecutors have until Wednesday afternoon to file charges or release him.
According to Washington State Patrol troopers and court documents, Olivera-Ramirez was driving a 1990 Honda Accord at 5:30 p.m. west on the highway when he tried to turn south onto Sacajawea Park Road. Olivera-Ramirez failed to yield to eastbound traffic and his car collided with a 2007 Pontiac G6.
The Pontiac, driven by David A. Wilz of West Richland, rolled onto its top and came to rest off the highway, troopers said.
Wilz, 60, and Janell L. Wilz, 55, were treated at Lourdes Medical Center in Pasco. Both wore their seat belts.
Trooper Doug Lux noticed Olivera-Ramirez had bloodshot and watery eyes and a flushed face after the wreck, along with "a strong and obvious odor of intoxicants on his breath," documents stated.
Olivera-Ramirez allegedly admitted to drinking two beers before driving. But at the Franklin County jail, after waiving his right to an attorney, he told Lux he had five beers, court documents stated.
Olivera-Ramirez provided two breath samples, which showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.256 percent both times, documents said.
The legal limit to drive in Washington is 0.08 percent.
As he was being booked at 7:19 p.m., a corrections officer reportedly found a plastic baggie of meth inside Olivera-Ramirez's wallet. He denied the meth was his.
