The death of a 1-year-old Richland boy in June has been ruled a homicide, Benton County Coroner John Hansens said Friday.

Ryder Joseph Morrison died in surgery after suffering a head injury at his home June 22.

Hansens issued the final death certificate Friday and listed Ryder's cause of death as abusive head trauma.

The boy also had injuries to other areas of his body, Hansens said.

No arrests have been made in Ryder's death and Richland police Capt. Mike Cobb said no arrests are pending.

"There is no change in status on our end at this time," Cobb said Friday.

The death remains under investigation, Cobb said, adding that detectives are waiting for more evidence in the case.

Police have not said who was home with Ryder when he was hurt or how he suffered the head injury.

Ryder lived with his mother, Tawney Johnson, in the 1300 block of Williams Boulevard.

Ryder's family previously said that the boy was being watched by a nanny at the time. Johnson was not home, the family said.

Richland police said Ryder was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center after medics were called to his home.

Detectives were called to the hospital by Child Protective Services after he died. Ryder turned 1 the day before.

The autopsy was done in June by Daniel Selove, a forensic pathologist from Everett, and a final report is expected in the next few days, Hansens said.

It took time to get information to rule on the cause and manner of death because Selove had to work with several pediatric specialists, including doctors from the University of Washington, to determine how Ryder was hurt.
