Villwock wins qualifying

Published: July 29, 2011

Dave Villwock stood in Lampson Pits on Friday, ready to get in his boat if someone beat his top qualifying speed of 160.892 mph.

But he never had to worry, as Steve David, driving the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto, could only get to 159.204.

"We tried," said David. "It was my fault. I was concerned I was going to go over on the N2 violation."

David said the on-board computer starts flashing when it looks like the boat is going over on the violation, which means there is to much fuel per minute flowing through the engine.

"I can count to 2 seconds and let off before it locks in," he said. "I counted too fast, and that cost us (in speed)."

Villwock and team got the 100 points given to the fastest qualifier, extending its lead over the Oberto and closing in on current leader U-17 Miss Red Dot.
