Tri-City Tappers place second at competition

The Tri-City Tappers took second place in the overall category at MOVE's High Gold Regional Championship, held in Spokane last month.

The event, sponsored by MOVE Productions, is an annual event that draws more than 300 dance groups from around the Northwest for the two-day competition.

The 12-member troupe, under the direction of former Las Vegas showgirl Kim Stock, are all women between the ages of 60 to 69.

There were six women's groups over the age of 40 who competed, but the Tappers were the oldest dancers vying for the top gold crown, said Katharine Thomas, one of the dancers.

"We were surrounded by much younger and more flexible dancers," she said. "But we got our sparkle on and took to the stage repeating our private mantra ... no guts, no glory."

A gallery of photos of the Tappers doing their thing at the competition can be viewed online at www.dancepixs.com.

As for the troupe's director, she couldn't have been prouder of her dancers

"I'm so proud of all my kids!" Stock said.

The Tri-City Tappers was established in 1994 under Stock's tutelage.

She also organized the Silk Stockings group of tappers, which is for dancers over the age of 40. She holds her classes at the Tri-Cities Academy of Ballet and Music in Richland.
