'OSS 117: Cairo, Next of Spies' funny if it's your thing

RICHLAND — I have the honor of hosting the last film of Battelle Film Club's 2011 Spring Series.

Before the film begins and after the showing you’ll find me hanging around the Battelle Auditorium lobby talking movies.

Join me if you have the time.

There is much to like about OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and much not to like. It’s about 50-50 and whether it works for you is going to depend on how your sense of humor meter is set.

The film is based on a French TV series from the 1950s and 1960s. This one was done in 2006 and another one was put out in 2009. It is a comedy that features Jean Dujardin as OSS 117, a James Bond-like character. OSS 117 is off to Cairo, Egypt to find a missing friend and defeat bad guys determined to conquer the world.

Think James Bond meets Maxwell Smart and Jacques Clouseau. It’s not close to as smart as a Bond flick and not as funny as Get Smart. While running very much along the same lines as The Pink Panther, there is some good news. OSS 117 is not quite as stupid as that series.

Dujardin sometimes looks so much like Sean Connery that it is spooky. He’s also a superb deadpan comedian and -- like the brilliant Don Adams who did the original Maxwell Smart -- Dujardin is able to toss off outrageous lines with complete sincerity.

And the lines are outrageous and sometimes quite offensive to certain religious beliefs. Other bits like an on-going gag about a chicken business are kind of funny. Key words: kind of.

And defining “kind of” depends on where your 50-50 meter sits. Mine doesn’t sit on the plus side. Yours might.

Mr. Movie rating: 3 stars

Not rated, probably PG-13 for mature themes. It plays Friday, June 3 only at the Battelle Auditorium at 8 p.m.

5 stars to 4 1/2 stars: Must see on the big screen
4 stars to 3 1/2 stars: Good film, see it if it's your type of movie.
3 stars to 2 1/2 stars: Wait until it comes out on video.
2 stars to 1 star: Don't bother.
0 stars: Speaks for itself.
