RENTON -- Turns out Richland will play Bothell in the 4A state baseball semifinals after all.

There was concern that Bothell would have to forfeit Saturday's 5-2 win over Edmonds-Woodway after it used a pitcher who had thrown a complete game earlier in the day in a 7-1 win over Federal Way.

Brian McAfee only threw one-third of an inning against EW after going the distance against Federal Way. But even that short outing appears to violate WIAA rules.

According to the WIAA handbook, Section 51.5.0, "When a pitcher pitches four (4) innings or more in a contest which began and ended on the same day or in a day, the pitcher shall not pitch again until two (2) calendar days have elapsed."

There is no exception listed for relief appearances, and in Section 51.5.1, "One (1) pitch constitutes an inning."

However, WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese told the Seattle Times that, based on the wording of the rule, Bothell was not found to be in violation.

"The problem arises with the language in the rule itself, the way it's written," Colbrese said. "It does allow the latitude that would stipulate that what the Bothell coach did was not a violation."

Colbrese said he expects the wording of the rule to be more clearly defined in the future.
