Sun Downs' final weekend hits today

By the Herald staff May 7, 2011

KENNEWICK -- The final weekend of racing at Sun Downs is upon us, with nine races today and 10 on Sunday.

And many of them are big.

Today's card will include fans having a chance to wager on and watch the Kentucky Derby, which is scheduled to go off at 3:24 p.m.

In addition to the Derby, the $16,700 Dick Monahan/AQHA Maiden Challenge Finals is set for the seventh race; and the $15,120 AQHA Pfizer Starters Allowance Challenge Finals is set for the ninth race.

"The Starters Allowance winner moves on to the finals later this fall in Los Alamitos," said Sun Downs racing secretary Shorty Martin.

On Sunday, the day's top race should be the $30,611 Pot O'Gold Futurity. But close behind is the $24,300 AQHA Meriel/Distaff Challenge Finals.

"The winner of that also advances to the finals this fall in Los Alamitos," Martin said.

Favored in that race is Sheza Bad Habit, which actually won this event here last year, then finished third at the finals last fall in New Orleans.

Also scheduled to run is the $3,250 Wildhorse Au Revoir Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, and the $3,439 Pot O'Gold Futurity Consolation.

Jesse J. Chavis is the top jockey of the meet coming into today's action, earning 10 firsts, six seconds and four thirds in 31 mounts.

Trey Fecta

Trey enters the final weekend with a bankroll of $362.60, all imaginary of course, and well above the $300 he started with.

For today's card, Trey will bet Jess Eye Am for the first half of the Daily Double, and $5 across the board on the horse.

In the second, it's Stitchtomylou for the second half of the Daily Double. We're boxing that horse in an exacta with Starswildcat.

In the third, we'll go $5 across the board on Vital Move.

We'll box an exacta of Graces Blue Apollo and A Dashing Wind in the fourth.

For the fifth-race Kentucky Derby, we'll take $5 across the board on Soldat, and we'll box a trifecta of Soldat, Pants on Fire and Stay Thirsty.

We'll take a $5 quinella of Hockey the General and Reason to Reckon in the fifth.

In the sixth, we're boxing a trifecta of Mountain Mustang, Black Canyon Bart and Hollywood Brass.

We like Hooters and Beer in the seventh at $5 across the board; and in the eighth we'll take Miss Slewledo for the first half of the Late Double. We'll also box an exacta of that horse with Voice of Angels.

Finally, in the ninth, we'll pick Full Snow Moon for the second half of the Late Double and $5 across the board on it.

That's $108 in wagers for the day.
