Shez Pretty Awesome lives up to billing

KENNEWICK -- Like mother, like daughter.

Shez Pretty Awesome took a page out of her mother's book Sunday to win the $3,900 Giltner's Sundowns Derby feature race at Sun Downs in Kennewick.

The daughter of Your So Awesome, the 3-year-old filly broke cleanly from the starting gate out of the 2 spot and built momentum -- just enough to hold off Wild N Sexy from the outside by a nose -- over the 350-yard sprint.

It took an extra five minutes to determine the winner with a photo-finish review. But as soon as the race became official and was posted on the toteboard, the estimated 1,500 fans who wagered a total handle of $53,047 on the day roared their approval.

For jockey Jesse J. Chavis, riding Shez Pretty Awesome for the first time, it was a good, clean ride.

"She didn't break from the gate as fast as she could," Chavis said. "But she ran her little guts out. She rallied up those last 50 yards."

For Chavis, it was his fourth victory as a rider for the day.

"Three wins is a hat trick," Chavis said. "Four wins is a hambone, right?"

Shez Pretty Awesome was relaxed in the paddock before the race, being led by her handler and eyeing the crowd with ease.

Her trainer, Bill Hoburg of Kennewick, had a short chat with Chavis right before the rider climbed aboard.

"I ran that filly's mama," said Hoburg. "She's an honest filly that's won over $160,000. And she won the Evergreen Futurity a few years ago. She never made a mistake. This little filly is the same way."

Hoburg, who also owns the winner along with Colville's Sabrina Abrahamson, just wanted her to get a clean break from the gate. And that's what happened.

It was a strong finish to another good day at the track.

Cliff Schellinger of the Tri-City Horse Racing Association was tickled.

"This is the best it's been in years out here," he said. "The weather has been nice, and people have been coming out in big numbers."

It was also a great prelude to what should be a big finish to the meet next weekend.

On Saturday, fans will be able to wager on the Kentucky Derby. And live races will include the American Quarter Horse Association Maiden Challenge finals; the AQHA Pfizer Starter Allowance; and the Jim Smith Ribbons and Lace Handicap.

On Sunday -- the final day of the six-day meet -- the premier event of the meet will be the Pot O'Gold Futurity finals, its consolation, the AQHA Distaff Challenge finals, and the Au Revoir Handicap.

Trey Fecta

Trey picked up $18.40 on Saturday, raising his total to $224.60 for the meet before Sunday's races.

Then Trey hit the Daily Double on Sunday and picked a couple other winners, finishing up $138.00 for the day.

That brings his season total up to $362.60, well up from the imaginary $300 bankroll he started the meet with.
