Sun Downs kicks off season with 9 races

By the Herald staff April 23, 2011

KENNEWICK -- The first of six race dates at Sun Downs race track in Kennewick kicks off today with a nine-race card.

Highlighting today's meet will be the ninth-race, $3,000 Boekenoogen Memorial at 250 yards. That's a lot shorter distance than the Boekenoogen is normally run.

"In the past, when we had five weekends of racing, we always had it at 400 yards," Sun Downs racing secretary Shorty Martin said. "But because of the shorter meet, we can't run every race like we normally do, like the Quarterhorse Speed Sprint at 250 yards. When I wrote the Boekenoogen I did it at both distances, and had the trainers pick it. Most of them wanted it at 250 yards."

Martin said some of the horses haven't been able to get as many workouts as needed, so trainers wanted the shorter distance. Some of the entries are here for the AQHA Challenge later in the meet and are using this race as a warmup for that.

The oddsmaker has made Vodka Soda No Fruit, owned by Bob and Scott Giltner and trained by Kurt Calton, the favorite in that race.

Other featured races include the eighth race Western States Equipment feature at 4 fourlongs, with 7-year-old At the Bada Bing the favorite at 5-to-2 odds; and the fourth race Homer Thoroughbreds "Home of Prospected" claiming race at 4 furlongs.

The Western State feature is a $6,250 claiming race.

"We rarely have a claiming race that high," Martin said.

First post today is at 1:30 p.m.

Trey Fecta's picks

It's a short meet, with just six race dates. But Trey wants to make some bets.

So the Herald gave him an imaginary bankroll of $300 for the meet. Let's see what he can do with it.

In the first, we'll start with $5 across the board on Sittin on a Secret, and bet the first half of the Daily Double on him.

In the second, pick Implausible to complete the Daily Double. Also bet a $5 quinella on Implausible and Caertotopthat.

We'll go with $2 across the board on Thr On a Famous High in the third, and we'll box an exacta of Voice of Angels and Snowbound Queen in the fourth.

Let's box an exacta in the fifth consisting of welfare Cadillac and Reason to Reckon.

For the sixth, we'll do a $5 quinella of Kimz Red Drover and Catch a Medal.

We're boxing a trifecta of Star of Nome, Coreythenavigator and Indys Wild Child in the seventh; and a $5 quinella of Justice for Al and Want the Facts in the eighth.

For the ninth, we're boxing a trifecta of Mr Easy Okie, Dashing Strawfly and Vodka Soda No Fruit.

That's $56 in wagers for today.
