* 1989 -- Vicente Batres scored three goals and assisted on another to pilot Kennewick to an easy 5-1 Big Nine victory over Pasco. The Lions opened scoring at the 21-minute mark when Harlan Slind scored on a penalty shot. About seven minutes later, Pasco's Troy Summerville tied the game with only the second goal Kennewick has allowed all season. The Lions closed out scoring with four unanswered goals -- three by Batres and one by David Hoxworth.
* 1974 -- Dave Williams and Kevin Schmidt each had three hits as Kennewick jumped out to an early lead and then held on during Sunnyside's six-run seventh inning in a 9-7 win over the Grizzlies under the new lights at Roy Johnson Field. "We weren't in too much trouble," said Lions coach Dean Hoff, "though it did look like they might come back and tie the game."
* 1960 -- Herald sports editor Charlie Van Sickel was so enamored with a CYO boxing show he watched at Christ the King School that he later gave it a favorable review compared to professional boxing. "Thirty-eight fighters appeared on the 19-bout card and almost any three tossed more leather than one sees in three months of television. It's highly refreshing to watch scrappy amateurs after repeatedly sluggish TV bouts which more often than not resemble the "Arthur Murray Dancing Party."
