This section of the blog has spoilers. If you havent seen Source Code, then you will want to watch it before you enter your opinion.
In my interview with director Duncan Jones, I suggested a different ending than he chose.
He and I discuss it. I give my opinion. He gives his. What is yours?
GW: Lets talk about the end of Source Code. Were going to have a long conversation here that Im going to have to edit out much of because I dont want to give it away. There were bunches of places where you could have ended it or twisted it a different way but didnt. I wouldnt have done what you did.
There is a place on the time travelers last trip to the train where he catches the bomber and the train is saved. Hes trying to exist in an alternative universe.
When the eight minutes is up, he kisses his new-found love and time is up. The universe freezes, and thats it. Everyone is frozen in time forever.
I like that ending. Now you have to think. Did they continue on and exist in an alternative universe that you cant access. Or did they simply cease to exist forever.
DJ: I am the one who pushed the ending weve got. Im guilty. I like it, and you are right. The ending you picked is a possible ending. In fact, we have a version when we ended it like that. I found it too sugar-sweet for my mind, especially with the long list of loose threads that we had left at that point.
Coulter just caught the bomber, which means that Coulter would never have been sent on the mission to stop the train. And because were in a parallel reality now where Coulter is living in someone elses body, there must be a Coulter Stevens back at the base who hasnt been sent on the mission yet.
I love the Twilight Zone nature of that ending. For me, that really wraps up that hanging threat. I felt it was a necessary epilogue to address that issue for the sci-fi geeks out there.
GW: But Vera Farmigas character gets the text message from him that warns her of the crisis. Jeffrey Wrights character asks her whats wrong and she says nothing. And it all starts in that universe. That was cool and I did like it.
So what happens now?
You know, very rarely do I want to talk to anybody about the ending of a movie, but I cant wait to dialogue with my readers about this one.
DJ: Whenever weve had audiences see the film, theyre talking about what the ending means when they leave the theater -- and not where theyre going to get a pizza.
GW: I felt the same way about Moon. What is the guy going to do when he gets back to Earth?
And speaking of back to Earth did you like the ending of Source Code? Would you prefer my ending? Or that of Duncan Jones?
While were at it, what did you think of the film? It is definitely one of the years best -- and no doubt it will be on my best list at the end of the year.
