Idaho mulls expanding trophy hunt auctions

BOISE -- Idaho lawmakers may expand auctions for trophy big game hunts over objections of state wildlife management officials who say they've fielded complaints about high-priced hunts for the wealthy.

Doug Sayer, a southeastern Idaho businessman and avid hunter, is behind this proposal that could direct some $200,000 yearly to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Sayer says this could help re-establish Idaho as a mecca for trophy big game hunters. The bill, which cleared the House Resources Committee Thursday, foresees annual auctions of up to three elk, deer and antelope tags, and one moose, wild sheep and mountain goat tag.

The Fish and Game Commission opposes the bill because it undermines its control over timing and location of hunts.
