Athletes of the Week for March 25, 2011

March 25, 2011

The Mid-Columbia Athletes of the Week for March 25, 2011.

Boys

Matt Mendenhall, Southridge, jr.

Mendenhall, a three-sport star, knows how it feels to have a good day. But he went off the charts during Wednesday's doubleheader sweep over Redmond, the preseason favorite to win the 4A state title.

"It was one of those days you feel like you can't do anything wrong," he said.

The junior third baseman went 7-for-8 with two homers and seven RBIs on the day as Southridge romped to 20-2 and 15-5 wins. He hit for the cycle in the second game.

Mendenhall is leaning towards baseball in college, but hasn't quite ruled out football, either. He's hoping to land somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, maybe even with Oregon, where his brother Andrew currently plays.

"I think there's a lot of hope," Matt said. "It depends on how bad they want me."

Girls

Remy Bradley, Hanford, jr.

Bradley plays shortstop for a logical reason -- "Probably because we don’t have anybody else," she said.

Truth be told, Bradley really loves to play in the outfield, which allows the speedy junior to stretch her legs a bit. But last Saturday, Bradley displayed her hitting ability, going 7-for-10 with a triple as Hanford split a doubleheader with Eisenhower.

She also came on as a pitcher in the second game, throwing 6 1⁄3 innings of scoreless relief to give her team a chance to come back in an 11-10 loss in eight innings.

"She works hard to improve her hitting, and she's really stepped up for us in practices," said Hanford coach Lesley Guereca. "That's the kind of stuff we expect."
