KENNEWICK -- What's behind the door, trash or treasure? That's the thought always running through Kevin and April Osborn's minds as they unlock the door of an abandoned storage unit. The couple own Second Hand Heaven, a Kennewick resale shop for used household goods.

For more than a year they have been buying the contents of abandoned storage units and scouring yard and estate sales searching for used furniture, electronics, glassware and china, rugs, hassocks, tables and chairs -- anything and everything they can resell.

They bought 36 storage units last year, paying anywhere from $600 to $800 apiece, never knowing the contents until after the sale.

Those shows you see on TV where they show people buying the contents of storage units and finding valuable antiques, cars and other items they can sell for lots of money, they are myths, Kevin Osborn said.

"It only happens once in a great while," he said. "We take a risk buying a unit; they're sold sight unseen. Sometimes there's furniture. More often just boxes of small items and clothing."

One of their best finds was a unit holding five cedar chests. One was made by Lane Furniture, while the others were custom made and had the craftswoman's name inside on a brass plate.

Another unit yielded a 1910 steamer trunk built by a Seattle manufacturer. It was a wardrobe, fitted with drawers and hangers. It even had the original keys, April Osborn said.

Their most surprising, and saddest, discovery were the ashes of twin premature babies.

"They were in the plastic boxes from the mortuary with all the paperwork," Kevin Osborn said. "They belonged to a couple who had divorced and the man, after a while, decided to stop paying for the storage unit."

"We could see, as we went through the unit, their lives unraveling box by box," he said.

Personal items like that, including photos and papers, all get boxed and given to the storage company. They are required by law, and decency, to try and find the rightful owners, he said.

When the Osborns first began their resale business early in 2010 they sold their finds on various free sites on the internet. It didn't take long for them to fill two storage units of their own plus their garage and any free storage space in their house.

"I have fond memories of that garage," he said.

That's when they decided to open a store.

Where was never an issue.

"We love Kennewick and wanted to draw more people into the downtown area," Kevin Osborn said.

They found the perfect place at 322 W. Kennewick Ave.

It has lots of foot and vehicle traffic. Kennewick High School, the library and the bus transfer station are just blocks away and they are only a few doors east of the stop sign at Dayton Street and Kennewick Avenue.

April Osborn said when they first rented the store it seemed spacious and they wondered how they would fill it up.

Now it's crowded with furniture and household goods. Shelves are full of electronics and glassware, mirrors and pictures lean against dressers and cabinets, tables support lamps and smaller pieces of furniture. There's even a foosball table in the middle of the store.

Sofas, chairs and end tables are arranged toward the front door along with bar stools and a treadmill. Display cases at the front counter protect watches, costume jewelry and fragile china. In the back corner room, what Kevin Osborn calls the Man Cave, are tools and tires.

"We truly have something for everyone, even toys," April Osborn said.

Since opening the shop, the Osborns have been taking consignments, accepting everything from a collectible Murray toy tractor to bar stools.

"If we think we can sell it, we'll take it," he said.

They also offer a delivery service.

"Depending on where you live it's either free or we charge up to $25," he said.

Second Hand Heaven is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
