Tri-City team wins Vegas lacrosse tourney

The Eastern Washington U17 All-Star Lacrosse team dictated most of the on-field action during last month's Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas, sweeping all five of their tournament matchups by impressive margins, including a 16-2 rout of defending champion Bishop Gorman in the title game.

"To be honest with you, we basically tore up everybody," said team captain Drew Wade who, along with brothers Austin and Trent Wellner, accounted for 45 of the team's tournament-total 62 points.

"Our game was 16 to 2, and it got to the point of the third quarter that we stopped scoring and passed the ball around," Wade said of the team's sportsmanship. "We didn't slow up, we were working on our plays, still plenty hard, of course."

Wade collected 18 goals and 12 assists over the duration of the tournament, Trent Wellner had 15 goals and six assists, and Austin Wellner scored 12 times and doled out eight assists.

McKay Mitchell totaled four goals for the All-Stars, Evan Branton scored three times, Colton Welch twice and Kasey Jones and Trevor McGuirk added a goal apiece.

And anchoring the defense, All-Stars goalie Danny Hart had a success ratio of 65-percent for the tournament.

"It was five great games and we won all five of them," said Hart who also extended an invitation to Tri-Cities area youth to look into the sport. "It's a great sport, we'd like anyone to try it. They'll like it, it's fast paced, the hitting of football, the running of soccer and the speed of hockey."
