KENNEWICK -- Being a running back in a pass-first spread offense has to be a little like being that extra button that comes with a sportcoat.

You might not be the first option, but you know someday your time will come.

Kamiakin running back Zach Umemoto made the most of his opportunities when his number was called Friday night in the Braves' 48-10 victory over Southridge at Lampson Stadium.

The 5-foot-11 junior carried nine times for a game-high 118 yards and a touchdown. Umemoto also added a pair of receptions, including a 5-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

"I wasn't concerned (about getting touches). As long as our team plays as a team," said Umemoto, who was switched back to running back after being moved to receiver last season. "The line blocked really well tonight."

If that's not enough, Umemoto also started at linebacker, collecting three tackles and splitting a sack with teammate Jon Allen, helping cement Kamiakin's smothering defensive performance.

"Zach is a kid who is all heart. Everything you want in a football player," said Braves coach Scott Biglin. "I always knew we could run the ball. It's good to be able to make teams guess."

In fact, Kamiakin was more effective on the ground Friday, piling up 255 yards rushing on 32 attempts -- just under eight yards per carry -- to balance out 210 passing yards for a total of 465 yards from scrimmage.

"We knew this group was going to be special. You hear the kids talking," said Suns coach Tony Reiboldt. "First and foremost, their guys up front are outstanding. They give Jansen time and let those deep routes develop. Then it's just target practice."

Kamiakin didn't waste any time getting started, scoring on its first two drives of the night in the first 2:51 of the game. In fact, Umemoto and James Swinyard combined to score the first four touchdowns.

On a third-and-10 from the Braves' 47, Swinyard hauled in a Jansen pass at midfield on the third play of the second quarter, slipped a tackle and ran the rest of the way to give Kamiakin a 27-0 lead.

"It's a rivalry game, so everyone's expected to step up," said Jansen, who completed 11 of 18 passess for 201 yards and four touchdowns. "I was hurt last year, so in four years I haven't been able to play them yet."

Southridge quarterback Matt Mendenhall, who leads the CBBN in passing, completed 19 of 29 passes for 198 yards, but the Suns inability to run the ball kept them from sustaining any scoring drives in the first half.

Including Kamiakin's four sacks, Southridge finished with 13 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Much of the plus yards came from Chris Hauter's 25-yard fourth-quarter run, which set up the Suns' only touchdown, a 9-yard pass from Mendenhall to Dallin Palmer with 6:28 left in the game.

Palmer provided the game's most exciting play late in the first quarter. With Southridge trailing 20-0, Palmer skied to haul in a deep pass down the right sideline and then made two electrifying cutback moves on what appeared to be a 75-yard scoring play. But the play was nullified because of a holding call back on the 25-yard line.

"Whenever you get a big play, it's demoralizing to have it called back. It definitely would have been a morale booster, but that's just football," said Palmer, who caught three passes for 26 yards but finished with just nine rushing yards on five carries. "Honestly, our flow on offense was non-existent. The coaches put us in a position to be successful, and Kamiakin just outplayed us."
