Lost Richland hiker found after cold night

By the Herald staff

A Richland hiker who spent a chilly night outside after getting lost in the Stafford Creek area was found safe Wednesday morning, Kittitas County sheriff's deputies said.

Lawrence Dykier, 48, and another hiker, Russell Barngrover, 46, of Charlotte, N.C., were found by Kittitas County Search and Rescue horse teams within two miles of their camp, about 30 miles north of Ellensburg, said Undersheriff Clayton Myers.

The men were wet and cold but otherwise in good health, Myers said.

He said the men had hiked away from the camp area Tuesday and became disoriented when rain reduced their visibility to less than 100 yards.

They were forced to spend the night in 40-degree weather without shelter or provisions.

Stafford Creek is near the Stuart Range between Kittitas and Chelan counties.
