On this Sept. 5 in ...

* 1957 -- Marine sharpshooter C.W.O. Roy F. Rice of Pasco placed second overall with a score of 734x750 at the national service rifle championships in Camp Perry, Ohio.

* 1975 -- Jeff and Wiley Allred and John Turley led the Royal City Knights to a 33-0 shutout over Highland in Yakima Valley A Conference action. Quarterback Wiley Allred connected with his brother twice for scoring passes of six and three yards, while Turley added scoring runs of 70 and 2 yards to boost his total ground yardage to 101 yards on eight carries.

* 1988 -- Tri-Citian Mike Pitman bowled a 269 to place first overall and take home $2,000 in the $16,000 Northwest Pro Bowlers Association Invitational at Atomic Bowl in Richland.

* 2001 -- Ian McDonald scored with 1:42 remaining to lift the Tri-City Americans to a 7-6 win over the expansion Vancouver Giants in New Westminster, B.C. The victory also marked the beginning of the Mark Wagstaff-Bob Tory-Troy Mick era of the Americans franchise.
