Scouting the CWAC

By the Herald staff

The Central Washington Athletic Conference has four playoff berths this season instead of three, which has coaches excited.

* Othello, which claims to be in a rebuilding stage this season, was a near unanimous pick to finish first in the coaches poll. After 14 straight trips to the playoffs, opposing coaches know better.

* East Valley, which hasn't been to the postseason since 2006, could upset the apple cart in the playoff picture with the addition of running back Cody Nickoloff, who transferred in from Wapato. He could be the missing piece to the puzzle.

* After a lean year, Prosser should be in contention for the conference title. The players are more mature and have had a year to adjust to Sonnichsen's playbook. Missing the playoffs again won't sit well in a community used to watching football until December.

* Prosser will get a true test of its ability in its first game tonight against multi-talented Tim White and 3A Kamiakin. It is the first time the two teams have ever played each other.

* Look for Ellensburg, under veteran coach Randy Affholter, to bid for another conference title and a second trip to the 2A state playoffs. The Bulldogs return five starters on offense, including WR Kramer Ferrell.
