I have never been so astonished and mad as I was on the evening of Aug. 26 when my wife and I attended the Benton Franklin County Fair.
Ted Nugent was performing (?) onstage, cursing, shouting obcenities, screaming at the top of his voice, etc. All while in the presence of many young children.
This is an insult to our society, and whoever was in charge of entertainment should be dismissed for not researching this group. It is definitely not one that should be at a county fair, where families gather to enjoy the displays, livestock, rides and more.
Shame on the fair board for allowing this to go on. The show should have been stopped, buses loaded and had them shipped to the nearest depot out of town.

Rascal Rodeo rocks
Rascal Rodeo rocks
I want to commend Rascal Rodeo and the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo's board of directors for sponsoring the wonderful Rascal Rodeo event during the fair. More than 100 cowboys and cowgirls volunteered their time to create an opportunity for people with disabilities to experience firsthand how it feels to ride a horse, rope a sheep and ride a bull.
Wow! The smiles on the faces of the 30 individuals who participated said it all. What a great community we live in, where people are reaching out to make sure all can participate.
Thanks again to all the people who donated their time. Special thanks to Ann-Erica Whitemarsh for her vision that all people no matter their disability should have the opportunity to participate, and kudos to the fair board for supporting this great event and making it accessible for all. Thank you for valuing persons with disabilities.

Among the many things that make the Tri-Cities a special place -- regularly competing for the No. 1 spot, actually -- is the Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo.
We've had another good year.
In fact, a terrific year.
Calculating FairTax
Calculating FairTax
I have an issue with Eric Greenwell's calculations in his Oct. 25 letter, "FairTax skeptic." In his example of 77 cents plus 23 cents equals $1.00, the 23 cents is 23 percent of the $1 spent, but that is not the correct tax for the 77 cents. The correct tax should be 23 percent of the 77 cents, or 0.23 times 0.77 plus 0.1771, or 18 cents, so 77 cents plus 18 equals 95 cents, which is what should be collected. The ratio 23/77 is meaningless in this problem.
A second issue concerns persons avoiding paying Washington sales tax by going to Oregon. Since the 23 percent tax will be nationwide, one would still avoid the Washington tax by going to Oregon, same as now.
