Lazy Hazy Alpaca Dayz will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 31 at alpaca farms in Kennewick, Richland, Benton City and Prosser.
Visitors to the annual free summer open house, sponsored by the Alpaca Breeders Co-op of the Greater Tri-Cities, will see baby alpacas and be able to talk to the breeders and watch fiber arts demonstrations

Volunteers are cleaning beaches and Audubon members have mobilized in Louisiana to help the birds.
And here in the Mid-Columbia, thousands of miles from the Gulf Coast, alpacas are helping too.

Richland Gardens to celebrate name change
Richland Gardens, an assisted living facility, has become Emeritus at Richland Gardens. The grand opening, a free "Fun, Food and Games Carnival," is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the facility, 770 W. Gage Blvd.
There will be pony rides, alpacas, bunnies, small games for children and popcorn. Ye Old Car Club will have a display of antique cars and Corvettes.
Hot dogs and corndogs, plus a soft drink, will be available for $1.50. Proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk on Sept. 17.

Freeing and Damning
I’ve had mixed results in my quest to stop sucking at portraits. . The freedom in these assignments can be both blessing and curse. In pretty much every other aspect of this job, you deal with what you have. Bad lighting, messy backgrounds and camera shy subjects are just a few of the daily hurdles we encounter. People and animals can act and move unpredictably, and things have a way of not working out as you had hoped.
A messy background for a news story must either be avoided or covered up by your subjects. Don’t like where that water bottle is sitting? Too bad, you can’t move it. The angle you would like to photograph from means your subjects are backlit? Well, then you’re going to have to use fill-flash , silhouette them or expose for the shadows .
We face many of these same problems on portrait assignments, but we also have much more control. In a portrait, you can move that bottle out of there and reposition your subjects to your liking. It’s both freeing and damning, however, because there’s
