Elvis Presley, legendary guitarist Eric Clapton and an encore performance of the opera Carmen will give Tri-Citians something new to see on the big screen this week.
Clapton will share the stage with some of the greatest musicians in the world during a star-studded concert event tonight at Regal 8 cinema at Columbia Center mall in Kennewick.
Eric Clapton Crossroads 2010 will be on the big screen in more than 475 movie theaters nationwide, according to NCM Fathom and Rhino Entertainment.
The special two-hour event, presented in HD at 7:30 p.m., will feature musical performances from the all-day Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 last month in Chicago.
This one-night event gives fans a chance to experience two hours of the greatest moments from the festival, including performances by Clapton, ZZ Top, Steve Winwood, BB King, Jeff Beck, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, Buddy Guy, John Mayer and others.
Theater audiences also see behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the performers.
Two other special entertainment events are planned this week at the Regal 8 theater:
-- "The MET Summer Encore: Carmen" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The show runs nearly three hours.
Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna caused a sensation with their smoldering Jan. 16 performances in the Met's acclaimed new production of Bizet's masterpiece.
One of the most popular operas of all time, Carmen "is about sex, violence, and racism -- and its corollary: freedom," says Olivier Award-winning director Richard Eyre. Barbara Frittoli plays Micala, Teddy Tahu Rhodes is the matador Escamillo, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts in his widely praised Met debut.
-- The "Elvis on Tour: 75th Anniversary Celebration" is showing at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Warner Bros., Elvis Presley Enterprises and NCM Fathom are commemorating the 75th anniversary of Presley's birth with this
film.
This one-night event will feature much of the last film footage shot with Elvis, a specially produced, exclusive retrospective from Priscilla Presley, and never-before-seen Elvis footage.
More than 25 numbers spotlighting Elvis Presley's talent, range and showmanship chronicle of his multi-city 1972 series of concerts. Plus montage sequences (supervised by Martin Scorsese) showcase Presley's early career in music and movies.
This different look at the King of Rock 'n' Roll earned a Golden Globe for Best Documentary.

'Big Miracle' not so big, but miraculous
'Big Miracle' not so big, but miraculous
You can legitimately call Big Miracle the feel good movie of the year.
Never mind that the year isn’t very old. It is hard however not to like an “inspired” by a true story flick about saving endangered whales.
An inspired John Krasinski from TV’s The Office anchors the movie and leads an equally inspired cast of who’s who actors. Best known are Drew Barrymore and Kristen Bell. Supporting them are Ted Danson, Tim Blake Nelson, Dermot Mulroney and others.

First some observations: If you're just interested in my best and worst of the year picks, scroll down. They're easy to find.
Two remarkable things about 2011.
No. 1: As I write this, I am wrapping up 20 years as the Tri-City Herald's film critic. No. 2: Last year I cried at a movie. Actually, I cry at a lot of movies but for a much different reason than you suspect. But more on that in a bit.
