Assistance available for state's ag producers

By the Herald staff

PROSSER -- Producers have until Aug. 13 to apply for financial and technical assistance through Washington's most popular conservation program, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

EQIP is a voluntary technical and financial assistance program.

It's designed to help farmers improve irrigation efficiency; prevent wind erosion; reduce the use of high-risk pesticides; improve rangeland management and habitat for wildlife and beneficial insects; and reduce soil loss.

In most cases, producers who participate pay for roughly half of the costs of the conservation measures or practices.

The signup deadline is for Washington's general EQIP funding.

Interested agricultural producers can contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture service center office in Prosser, 415 Wine Country Road, or at 509-786-1923, ext. 3.
