Cascade wildflowers will be late bloomers

Nearly every summer, my next-door-neighbor Mark asks when the colorful displays in the alpine meadows at Mount Rainier National Park will be at their zenith.

Well, it will be later than usual because of wet weather and cool temperatures.

Research at Mount Rainier showed that Paradise — the most heavily visited area in the park — is at a remarkable 172 percent of normal for snowpack.

As of June 22, there were 114 inches of snow at Paradise. The historical average for that date 66.8 inches.

Those planning on covering the historic 93-mile Wonderland Trail in the next four weeks may consider packing a pair of snowshoes.
