Franklin County auditor on Facebook

By Kristi Pihl, Herald staff writer

PASCO -- Franklin County auditor's office is posting and tweeting.

The auditor's office started a Facebook page Thursday, and is experimenting with the internet site and Twitter as another way of communicating with county residents, said Auditor Zona Lenhart.

"The whole idea is to reach out to people and be inclusive," she said.

Lenhart sees the social networking tools as another way to get information out to the public. She got the idea for an auditor's site from the secretary of state's office, which uses Facebook.

She plans to have weekly posts.

For example, one of the office's first postings was a reminder that boat license renewals need to be done at the office's licensing department. Lenhart said the state decided not to send out boat license renewals this year as a way to save money.

Another post was about the office finishing the county's annual budget report, due to the state today.

People can send questions and comments to the auditor's office through Facebook, Lenhart said. Staff will check the site daily to respond to questions.

Lenhart's office first experimented with Twitter during the 2009 election. She said staff started using the micro-blogging service after the August primaries, and continued with it until after the November election.

Lenhart said she likely will decide between Twitter and Facebook because both take staff time.

At the moment, it's a work in progress, she said. Staff will accept any suggestions and feedback.
