WALLA WALLA -- The recently hired Walla Walla High School varsity head football coach says he is resigning because of a family decision not to move to Walla Walla.

Matt Hamlin, who also was to teach math, has been an assistant football coach and teacher at Skyview High School in Vancouver, Wash.

Mike Gobel, longtime Walla Walla High School math teacher and assistant football coach, will assume the head coaching duties on an interim basis for the 2010 season, said a news release.

"Mike Gobel is an outstanding leader and will do a great job coaching our football team," Walla Walla high school principal Darcy Weisner said in the release. "We will offer our full support to Gobel and the rest of our coaching staff as we move our football program forward."

District athletic director Don Wilkins said he appreciates Gobel's commitment to the program.

"I feel fortunate to have someone like Mike step into to this position and take on this leadership role in our program," Wilkins said. "We will provide him with the support he needs to be successful."

The district announced Hamlin's hire on May 5 to replace Marc Yonts.

Hamlin graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1999 and was a three sport athlete at Walla Walla High School. At the time, he said it was his "dream job."
