Burbank man born 5-5-55 turning 55

By Loretto J. Hulse, Herald food writer

BURBANK — Even if you don't know him well, it's easy to remember Ron Hackett's birthdate.

That's because the Burbank man -- who turns 55 on Wednesday -- was born on 5-5-55.

Which brings him a lot of surprised looks.

"Holy moley, everybody comments," he said.

"We've been together a lot of years and every time we fill out a legal document or any type of document where you need to put down your birthdate, someone always comments on it," said his wife, Mary.

The strange looks may get old, but odd numbers in general and fives in particular do seem to bring Hackett luck.

He and Mary enjoy shooting pool on Saturdays. When he calls odd (numbered balls), Ron often wins. Not so much when he opts for evens.

Even his marriage to Mary involved fives.

"When I turned 25 -- I don't know if it was actually on my birthday but it was pretty close, within a few days -- I met my second wife, Mary, my significant other," he said. "We lived in an apartment complex in Kennewick and Mary was my next-door neighbor. Her daughter used to baby-sit my sons."

And birthday fives pop up a second time in the family. Their son-in-law, Jeff Deines of Pasco, is another May baby. His birthdate is 5-15-65, making him 45 this year.

And he and Mary have five grandchildren.

The Hacketts don't have a special celebration planned for Wednesday, but Mary is considering buying lottery or scratch tickets with lots of fives that day. Or maybe she'll play Hit 5, with a minimum Cashpot of $100,000.

"I don't play often, just once in a while, but you never know," she said.
