Meriel Distaff to cap Sun Downs final card

HERALD STAFFMay 2, 2010

Sun Downs saw a good-sized crowd -- an estimated 1,800 -- turn out Saturday to wager on the Kentucky Derby and eight local races.

Tops among the local races was the eighth-race Jim Smith Farms Ribbons and Lace Handicap at 6 furlongs.

Nothing in Common, a 5-year-old owned and trained by Jim Craig, pulled away down the stretch to easily take the victory in the $3,200 handicap.

With rider Connie Doll aboard, Nothing in Common led from start to finish, and beat runnerup TJ Timber and jockey Nikeela Black by 23/4 lengths.

Black picked up four more victories in the saddle Saturday, cementing her performance as this meet's top rider. She now has 22 wins.

Apart from the Kentucky Derby pool, the Sun Downs crowd wagered $45,159 on the other eight races Saturday.

Today's final card is 10 races, with the meet's biggest purse of $30,780 set for the 10th-race AQHA Meriel Distaff Challenge at 400 yards.

Daddies Little Girl, with Black, is the oddsmaker's favorite at 2-to-1 odds.

First post is at 1:30 p.m.

TREY FECTA

Trey started Saturday with $244, well down from the original (and imaginary) $500 bankroll at the start of this meet.

On Saturday, Trey Fecta won a trifecta and a few other races to stop the bleeding for the most part, netting a loss of $10.10 for the day to bring the season total down to $233.90.

For today's first race, Trey wants the double entry of Mary Has It All and Graces Blue Apollo for the first half of the Daily Double, and $5 across the board.

In the second, it's Slews Indy to complete the Daily Double and a Slews Indy and Bandalito Hombre for the exacta box.

We're going with a Sheza Fast One, Paraphrase and Buford Tucker boxed trifecta in the third.

In the fourth, it's $5 across the board on Brakeman; and a trifecta box of Whatsamillion, Bay Wide Total and Gentle George in the fifth.

In the sixth, it's $5 across the board on Long Hollow, plus a trifecta box of Long Hollow, Shazoomin for Honor and Tombstone Tina.

We're boxing an exacta of the double entry of Johnnydrew and Bullish Yield with On the Hill in the seventh.

We like $5 across the board on King Kang in the eighth, plus a boxed trifecta of King Kang, De Heatison and Historic Event.

In the ninth race Au Revoir, it's Mystic Wood for the first half of the Late Double, $5 across the board on Mystic Wood, plus a trifecta box of Mystic Wood, Tom West and Millers Charm.

We'll complete the Late Double with Sheza Bad Habit in the 10th, plus $5 across the board on her and a final trifecta box of Sheza Bad Habit, Ldscherry Cola Chick and Just Cant Hide It.

That's $138 in wagers on this final day.
