Here Come the Budder races to Sun Downs' Pot O'Gold

By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editor April 19, 2010

KENNEWICK -- The Weigts and Monte Arossa are trying to make winning the Pot O'Gold Futurity a habit.

For the second straight year, owners Denny and Sandy Weigt and their trainer, Arossa, brought a horse to Sun Downs and came away with the prestigious Futurity victory.

Sunday's winner was Here Come the Budder, ridden by Antonio Alberto, with a winning time of 15.54 seconds.

"She's a filly I bought last year at the Heritage sale," said Arossa. "Her mother (Budderfly Effect) ran in the Northwest and did well. So we knew she was a nice mare.

"In the (Pot O'Gold) trials, she was pretty erratic, but she still won her race," Arossa said. "We felt really good about her."

Denny Weigt, reached by phone at his Jerome, Idaho, home, was ecstatic.

"I'm pretty happy," he said. "We call her Budderfly."

Four of the other horses scheduled to compete in the $22,450 race at 300 yards -- favorite Kimz Hucklebery Hank, Dip In the Curve, Kimz Red Drover and Just Wanna Win -- had their owners or trainers scratch them for various maladies of pulled muscles, chips or fever.

That dropped the field from 10 to six.

Here Come the Budder was undaunted, and she looked as cool as ice in the paddock before the race.

With Alberto aboard, she bolted from the starting gate cleanly and got out front in a hurry.

She finished fast and won by a head over Chitchatin Okie and jockey Ruben Camacho.

"She's a very, very nice horse," said Alberto, who flew in from Southern California to ride her. "Her personality is as beautiful as she is. All the credit goes to Monte and his outfit. I will be riding for him as long as he'll have me."

Alberto stepped in admirably for Arossa's usual rider, Zach Kelsey, who found a regular riding gig this year at Los Alamitos.

It was Kelsey who last year rode Princess of Zoom -- owned by the Weigts and trained by Arossa -- to victory in the Pot O'Gold while destroying the Sun Downs track record at 300 yards in 15.21 seconds.

Princess of Zoom went on to win three more races -- for four wins in as many races -- when she shattered her knee at Wyoming Downs in Evanston, Wyo., and had to be euthanized.

"Oh gosh that was a super nice filly," said Denny Weigt. "She broke that record by quite a ways. She just shattered the knee. That guy at Evanston told me she stepped in a mud hole that had been covered over with dirt. It was after the race and she was cooling down and turning the corner."

But Weigt may have another good one with Here Come the Budder.

"We were hoping upon hoping that she would win," he said. "She's a grand looking thing."

A good sized crowd bet $59,742, the highest handle of the meet so far. ... Trey Fecta lost $66.20 on Sunday, dropping the imaginary bankroll (that started at $500) down to $328.
