Maya Angelou Elementary students raised $5,201.05 to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is researching a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Nathan Finke, 8, a third-grader at the school, has cystic fibrosis, which affects his lungs and pancreas, said his mom Amy Finke. Nathan has too much mucous in his body which provides a breeding ground for germs. He takes about 30 pills a day so he can eat and goes through several treatments.
"The kids went above and beyond," Amy said. "It far surpassed our expectations." The goal for the Curefinders fundraiser was $1,000.
Nathan's family, including his father, Cary Finke, started fundraising for the foundation when Nathan was born and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Amy said the family raises about $20,000 in each year.

Mid-Columbians give help at home, around the world
We're proud to be part of the Mid-Columbia, and it's no surprise to us that our friends and neighbors are being nationally recognized for their selflessness and service.
For example, Energy Secretary Steven Chu honored a big list of workers from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for what Chu called service "above and beyond the call of duty."
You don't have to look far to see the good works of people in our community. But apparently that aura can be seen around the world.

Richland runner Bullock breaks free of cystic fibrosis
RICHLAND -- The first thing you need to know about Sidney Bullock is she loves to run. Not to the mailbox or the mall, or even easy evening jogs, but hard workouts -- 7, 10 miles long.
The second thing you should know about Sidney is she loves to run. In her younger years, she wore a path in the grass along the fence of the family's West Richland home running countless laps. More than once, she has woken her father from a deep sleep around midnight because she hasn't gotten in her daily miles.
The third thing you need to know ... you get the picture.
