Teen plans Yakima Valley charity fun run

By the Herald staff

GRANDVIEW -- The Sage Rat Run, a half-marathon fun run, is planned May 22 in the Yakima Valley.

The run, coordinated by Gabriel Akins, 16, of Grandview, is a benefit for The Ronald McDonald House program.

Akins needs volunteers to help coordinate the run, plus runners and walkers to participate. Participants can also do a team relay.

The $25 entry fee includes a T-shirt and a finishing medal for runners and walkers. Proceeds from the run will benefit the Ronald McDonald House program, which provides housing, food and treatment for families and children.

The Ronald McDonald Houses in Washington are in Seattle and Spokane.

The run begins at 8 a.m. at the Walmart store in Sunnyside and ends at the chamber of commerce in Prosser.

The run is 13.1 miles along the Lower Yakima Valley Pathway, a wheelchair-accessible, multipurpose trail with an asphalt surface. The trail is mostly flat but has some minor grades along with some rough pavement.

Registration is required.

For more information, to volunteer or register, go to www.sageratrun. com, e-mail Akins at rats@sageratrun.com or call 509-882-7904.

Akins is a student at Yakima Valley Community College and a senior airman in the Civil Air Patrol, Yakima Composite Squadron.
