PORTLAND -- The Tri-City Americans have done a poor job of protecting their lead in the U.S. Division on their latest road trip.
Playing their sixth straight on the road, the Americans dropped a 6-3 game to Portland on Saturday at the Rose Garden before a crowd of 10,194, putting them in a tie with Everett atop the division standings.
Tri-City (45-20-1-2, 93 points) has lost two in a row and has just four games left in the regular season, including tonight's game at Seattle.
Everett, which has earned points in its last 11 games, also has four games left -- none against the Americans.
Saturday, the Americans opened the scoring just 1:43 into the game as Brooks Macek took a pass from behind the net from Sergei Drozd and beat Portland goalie Mac Carruth.
The Winterhawks' Ty Rattie tied the game a minute later, only to see Tri-City go back out front 2-1 on a power-play goal by Patrick Holland at 6:12.
That would be the Americans' last lead as Portland closed out the first period with goals by Ryan Johansen and Brad Ross.
Drozd pulled Tri-City even 2:53 into the second period, but it was all Portland the rest of the way.
Alex Pechurskiy finished with 26 saves for the Americans.
