SPOKANE -- Morgan Freeman scored 16 points and hauled down nine rebound to help Hanford defeat West Valley 52-42 in a loser-out game Friday at the 3A regional tournament at Rogers High School.
The Falcons (11-14) will play at 3:45 p.m. today against East Valley (Spokane) (9-16) in a loser-out, winner-to-state game.
Hanford, which also got 13 points and nine rebounds from Laura Hughes, beat the Rams for the first time in three tries this season.

SPOKANE -- Junior forwards Dillon Franklin (6-foot-4) and Deavon Daniels (6-5) combined for 44 points, and Rogers roared back from a 12-point deficit to Sunnyside heading into the fourth quarter by pouring in 31 points in the final period.
The Grizzlies were eliminated from the tourney one game short of playing for a trip to state, though not without a fight.
Israel Manzo scored 26 points and Alfredo De La Barrera added 15 for Sunnyside, which took command in the third quarter -- 43-31 -- only to see it slip away in the fourth.

KENNEWICK -- Three weeks into January, things were not looking good for the Southridge boys basketball team.
A 61-37 home loss to Kamiakin was the Suns' eighth loss in nine games, and their playoff hopes were starting to slip away. A year after making their third state appearance, the thought of not making the playoffs at all was all but unbearable.
"We were in bad shape at that point," Southridge coach Jason DeVere said. "Nobody wants to be there. But if you're there, it's a test of your character. What are you going to do?"

SUNNYSIDE -- John Dennis Hughes, 66, of Sunnyside, died Jan. 31 in Sunnyside.
He was born in LaGrande, Ore., and was a longtime Lower Valley resident.
He retired from social work.
