Campaign for Senate seat to be announced

By the Herald staff

PORTLAND -- Oregon law professor Jim Huffman plans to announce a run for the Senate seat held by Democrat Ron Wyden on Thursday.

Huffman is the former dean of the Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law. He stepped down as dean and has been a professor since 2006.

Wyden first was elected in a special election in 1996 to fill the Senate seat vacated by Bob Packwood. He was elected to full six-year terms in 1998 and 2004.

A Feb. 16 Rasmussen poll showed Wyden leading a hypothetical race against Huffman, a relative unknown, 49 to 35 percent, with 16 percent of the 500 respondents undecided or choosing neither.

Huffman will make his official campaign announcement at The Halton Company's Portland headquarters at 5 p.m. Thursday.

"It is entirely appropriate that I should announce my candidacy at the headquarters of this great Oregon company," Huffman said in a written statement Tuesday. "My campaign will be about jobs for Oregonians. Halton Company is a bellwether for the health of the Oregon economy."

According to the Federal Election Commission, other potential challengers in the race are Libertarian Marc Delphine, Democrat Pavel Goberman, Republican Dennis Hall and Republican Wayne Stutzman.

Wyden has reported raising $2.7 million for the campaign so far. His closest challenger is Goberman with $5,000.

Huffman has not yet reported any contributions.
