American Legion Auxiliary is putting on an essay contest for students in third grade through high school. The topic is "What is my patriotic role as a U.S. citizen?"
Tri-Cities winners will receive $25 and a citation. There also are larger prizes for the state and national winners.
Tri-Cities area students wishing to enter the contest should mail their entries to American Legion Post No. 34, 1029 W. Sylvester St., Pasco, WA 99301.
The entries must include the essay and cover sheet with the student's name, address, phone number, grade, school name and city, and teacher's name and signature. Entries must be postmarked by March 15.
Here are the word limit guidelines: grades 3-4, 150-250 words; grades 5-6, 250-300 words; grades 7-8, 350-400 words; grades 9-10, 450-500 words; and grades 11-12, 450-500 words.
One winner will be chosen from each of those groups.

* 2000 -- Rosalie Swanson of Richland was selected out of several entries in a contest to name the new Northwest League baseball franchise in Pasco, and the Tri-City Dust Devils were born. Swanson's submission edged out the Rattlers in a close decision. Other ideas for a mascot included the Fire, Black Sox, Triplets and Badgers. For her winning entry, Swanson earned season tickets for life.

Students win awards at Young Artists event
Twenty-four students competed recently in the annual Young Artists Competition, sponsored by the Mid-Columbia Symphony.
Seven Tri-City music students were named winners of the competition.
The overall winners were Jessica Liu in the primary strings and Spencer Hoffner in the primary piano. They will perform with the Mid-Columbia Symphony at its spring concert in May.

McLoughlin students finalists in essay contest
A group of students from McLoughlin Middle School in Pasco are finalists in the Patriot's Pen essay contest.
The students wrote essay-length answers to the question "Are you proud of your country?" The annual contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The students are Andre Voloshin, Race Bynum, Reed Tupper, Joel Rangel, Adrianna McKinney, Eric Castaneda, Taylor Woehle, Tenhya Keister and Glendy Ibarra.
