Motorsports preview: Big races set for Horn Rapids ORV Park

By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editor

RICHLAND -- There will be plenty of big-time action this year at the Horn Rapids ORV Park in Richland.

First, on March 20-21, the track will host a qualifier for the Lorretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Championships -- the biggest amateur competition in the country.

Then, from June 28 to July 4, the Tri-City Kart Club will host the 2010 International Kart Federation's 4-cycle Sprint and Shifter Grand Nationals.

Hydroplanes

The schedule is still not solidified for the unlimited hydroplanes, now known as H1 Unlimiteds (American Boat Racing Association name was dropped because the boats raced in Qatar last year).

Owners met last week in Seattle at the APBA meetings, and they will meet again March 5-6 in Las Vegas to finalize the schedule.

What we do know is the Detroit Gold Cup is moved up to June 25-27; the Madison Regatta is July 2-4; the Lamb Weston Columbia in the Tri-Cities is July 23-25; and Seafair is set for Aug. 6-8.

The Doha dates have not yet been set. Evansville may not happen, and a promoter wants to bring a race to Brazil. Seafair, which lost its General Motors sponsorship, is rumored to be considering two separate races over its weekend.

Hermiston

Columbia Motor Speedway, the former Race City USA in Hermiston, kicks off a full season of racing April 24 with six divisions.

The track has races almost every weekend throughouts the spring and summer, and it finishes with the second annual Kevin Gregerson Jr. Memorial Street Stock Invitational on Sept. 25.

NHRA

The Mid-Columbia has plenty of talented drag racers.

Kennewick's Mary Ann Method, Richland's Jim Waldo and his sons Jim (from Richland) and Gary (Hillsboro, Ore.) are entered in the Stock Eliminator division for the season-opening NHRA event, the Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals, in Pomona, Calif., set for Feb. 11-14.

Sunnyside's Michael and John Dalrymple are each entered in the Super Comp division.

John Dalrymple will also compete in the Super Gas division, as will Walla Walla's Dave Kelly.

Late Models

The iRacing.com ASA Northwest Late Model Tour -- which used to be the old Northwest Tour that ran through Tri-City Raceway -- has a 12-race schedule for this year.

Race dates for Yakima Speedway, the closest track to the Tri-Cities, are May 29-30 and Sept. 4-5.
