Warm weather may continue

By Annette Cary, Herald staff writer

Warmer than normal temperatures for this month are expected for the Tri-Cities, according to the National Weather Service.

That follows a much warmer than usual January that had temperatures averaging 39.3 degrees, which was 5.4 degrees above normal for the month.

El Nio likely was responsible, bringing warm air and increased moisture to the region.

At Hanford, the average temperature was even further above the normal for the site at 38 degrees. That was 6.2 degrees higher than usual for the month, according to the Hanford Meteorology Station.

The average temperature ties last month for the sixth-warmest January on record at Hanford with records set in 1981 and 2003.

Although the month was warmer than normal, the Hanford Meteorology Station recorded no record highs for the month. The highest temperature recorded at Hanford was 54 degrees on Jan. 15, which was well below the record high for the date of 60 degrees.

In the Tri-Cities, the average high in January was 44.8 degrees, 4.2 degrees above normal, and the average low was 33.7 degrees, 6.5 degrees above normal.

Lows for the month were 22 degrees Jan. 1 in the Tri-Cities and 20 degrees Jan. 7 at Hanford. Jan. 7 was the only day that the low temperature was as cold or colder than the average daily low for Hanford all month.

Normal temperatures for February in the Tri-Cities are an average high of 48 degrees and an average low of 30.3 degrees.

February also should be drier than January, when rain or snow fell on 22 days, according to the weather service. Forecasters predict precipitation should be near or less than normal precipitation for the Tri-Cities of 0.79 inches for February.

Precipitation in January was greater than usual, totaling 1.82 inches in the Tri-Cities. That's 0.77 inches above normal. At Hanford, precipitation totaled 1.24 inches, which is more than the normal 0.87 inch.

Two inches of snow fell in the Tri-Cities in January. At Hanford, there was just a trace of snow compared with the normal of 4.2 inches. Snowfall for the winter at Hanford has totaled just 4.8 inches, compared with a normal of 12.4 inches.

For the current water year that began in October, the Tri-Cities has had 3.92 inches of precipitation, which is 0.4 inches above normal.

The peak wind gust in January was 36 mph Jan. 13 in Kennewick and 43 mph Jan. 15 at Hanford.
