The student government group at Washington State University Tri-Cities isn't planning to participate in a protest rally today that's being staged at public universities across the state to voice concerns about state budget cuts and possible tuition increases.
Instead, the Associated Students of WSU Tri-Cities organized a letter-writing campaign and several students are planning to talk with legislators during Coug Day in Olympia on Feb. 15, a university news release said.
Students at Washington's public universities -- including WSU -- are experiencing two consecutive years of
14 percent tuition increases approved by the Legislature in 2009 after lawmakers cut hundreds of millions of dollars from higher education funding.
The idea was to raise financial aid to make sure low- and middle-class students still would be able to attend college, but now financial aid is in danger of being slashed because of a $2.6 billion state budget deficit.
