Pasco OKs hiring firm to handle arraignments
The Pasco City Council this week unanimously approved hiring a law firm to handle arraignments, where defendants enter a plea.
City Manager Gary Crutchfield said the municipal court judge is not accepting guilty pleas from defendants without lawyers. It means the city pays more for jail and public defense.
City Attorney Lee Kerr, in a Jan. 20 memorandum, said some state courts were being challenged for arraigning someone who pled guilty without counsel.
The contract could cost the city about $40,000.
