Consultant to lay out revitalization plans

By John Trumbo, Herald staff writer

A consultant will roll out concepts and discuss ideas for revitalizing Kennewick's riverfront properties at a public meeting Thursday.

Tom Beckwith of Beckwith Consulting was hired for $154,000 to develop a plan for the Bridge-to-Bridge, Rail-to-River area that includes the city's oldest properties along the Columbia River between the cable and blue bridges.

The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clover Island Inn, 435 Clover Island Drive in Kennewick, in the fourth floor conference rooms.

Beckwith and Kennewick's planning staff held seven community meetings during October and November to obtain comments from business and residential neighborhoods in the area.

The goal was to learn what people want, what they are willing to pay for and how they want it to happen, Beckwith said in describing the public input process last October.

Those ideas have been combined into several concept plans that will be the subject of Thursday's open house.

Results of a community survey about the area targeted for revitalization also will be revealed.

"As discussed earlier in the neighborhood meetings, the consultant will present various plan elements, including suggestions for trails, a road network and land use, with some alternatives for public input, said Ferdouse Oneza, Kennewick's planning manager.

A second survey will be conducted later this month, and the final proposals could go to the Kennewick planning commission in April before heading to the city council in May.

A copy of the plan elements and the alternatives will be posted on the city of Kennewick's website after Thursday at ci.kennewick.wa.us/Community_Planning/BBRRHome.asp .
