RICHLAND -- It's been a mix of good and bad days for a Kennewick woman who was paralyzed in a fall at the Benton County jail two weeks ago.
Lorri Kaneaster's mother, Dianne Bogart, said her daughter is fighting a host of medical problems since she broke her back when she fell from a second-floor railing at the jail.
"She's still not really stable," Bogart said Wednesday. "She's still running a fever and her vitals are still going up and down."
Kaneaster, 35, of Kennewick, has been in the critical care unit at Kadlec Regional Medical Center since Jan. 14 and is paralyzed from the waist down, her mother said.
She had a tracheotomy Wednesday morning to help her breathe. She has been dealing with fluid in her lungs, a collapsed lung, broken ribs and excessive swelling in her abdomen, Bogart said.
Once Kaneaster is stabilized, she'll be transferred to a rehabilitation facility, Bogart said, likely in Spokane or Couer d'Alene, Idaho.
An account has been established at Gesa Credit Union to help the family with travel costs once Kaneaster gets moved. Donations can be made in Lorri Kaneaster or Dianne Bogart's name at any branch.
Bogart said Kaneaster is still not well enough to talk more about how she fell. Before she had the tracheotomy, Kaneaster had tubes down her throat that prevented her from talking. She could only answer yes or no to questions using a paper on a clipboard, Bogart said.
The fall is under investigation by Benton County sheriff's officials. Bogart said she was told her daughter had been sitting on a second-floor railing and slipped and fell after corrections officers told her to get down.
Kaneaster had been in jail on a 72-hour hold after being arrested Jan. 11 by Kennewick police on suspicion of possessing meth, driving with a suspended license and failing to stop and identify at a crash.
